The Eastern Cape stretches from Cape St Francis in the west to the Wild Coast in the east. It is an area of attractive white sandy beaches backed by undulating rolling pastures and bushveld. A safari in the Eastern Cape is magical extension to any family holiday in South Africa and has the distinct advantage of being both easily accessible and malaria-free. Choose between the Addo Elephant Park or one of the Private Game Reserves. Back in 1919 a big game hunter was asked to exterminate all the elephants that often emerged from the bush to destroy the crops of local farmers. By 1931 there were only 11 elephants left and the Addo Elephant Park was created which ensured their survival. Today the Park is home to the densest elephant population in the world! It is also now home to lion, black rhino, hippo and the unique Cape Buffalo. Riverbend Lodge and The Elephant House are great places to stay for visiting the park. In recent years a number of Private Game Reserves have emerged in the area around Addo offering Big 5 game viewing in a malaria free environment. These are a great choice for a family safari.
